Running Stuff
This Wednesday. Run #7. Check it out below. Remember, East Nasties run Wednesday nights year round!
1/2 Marathon Training: Every year since 2004, the East Nasties have trained for the Country Music 1/2 marathon together. We meet every Sunday morning starting on January 3, and there are training plans for novice, intermediate and advanced runners. The best part is it’s a chance to train with 50+ other Nasties for free!
So, pencil December 13th into your schedule. That morning there will be the East Nasty 1/2 Marathon Informational Meeting/Run/Pot Luck Brunch. It will be a chance to get more information and try one of Zach’s world famous casseroles!
Odds and Ends.
East Nasty Dave Coleman and his band “The Coal Men” were featured on NPR Mountain Stages. Check it out!
East Nasty had a crew that did the Bourbon Chase relay race. Here is a video recap complete with Freddy Jones Band musical accompaniment.
I coach cross country at a local high school, and High School cross country runners have strange senses of humor. This year’s running (no pun intended) joke was “Spagett”. I had no idea what it meant until now… Yikes…this is even stranger than last year’s jokes: Llamas with Hats and Charlie the Unicorn.
See you on Wednesday.

East Nasty of the Week: Ian White
November 19, 2009
Skin is like waterfront property – there’s only so much of it, and once the space is taken, there is no more.
That is either the worst analogy ever, or the MOST AWESOME.
Either way, Ian White is proving it to be true.

Nasties, might you be wanting a tattoo? Look no further than our very own artist, Ian White. A recent transplant from the exotic land of Dayton, Ohio, you will know this man by the Straight Edge X on his face. This man has a lot of tattoos – full sleeves, a close-to-covered right leg, important dates and inside jokes and silly trifles and life-changing words, a butterfly, a bucket, a bullet – and in the spirit of East Nasty, his latest addition is an homage to running: a gigantic running robot on his left thigh which will eventually be wearing green shoes.

So how did this former Air Force intelligence worker wind up a tattoo artist? When Ian was in the Air Force, there was no rule against visible tattoos, so he started collecting them. Then the Air Force changed their rules, and somehow could not sanction a kid with a patterned throat; one would think that he would be grandfathered in and able to stay on, but he was not allowed to re-enlist.
All I can say is that Uncle Sam’s loss is Nashville’s gain.
Ian works at Black 13 in Cummins Station, and churns out some pretty incredible stuff. He has been in town for several months, living in East Nashville with his dog Penny, and appreciates the friendliness of the East Nasty crew (awww, guys! He lurvs us!).
I’m contemplating asking him to ink me with a Lisa Frank kitten – on a unicorn – on a rainbow – on my sternum. But time will tell.

Don’t be afraid of the dark…or cold.
It actually feels like fall today. Damp and cool. So it’s time to move the workouts indoors right? Wrong! East Nasty runs year round! While it’s definitely harder to get out the door when it’s cold, once you’re running you’ll never notice the brisk air. So get some reflective gear, grab your East Nasty hoody and join us for Run #6: 4.55 miles down Riverside.
Odds and Ends
1) We will be running next week. Come join us to proactively burn off those Thanksgiving calories!
2) Bring $30 and grab your hoody. Better yet, bring $40, grab your hoody and join us at 3 Crow.
3) Do you think that the sophomore slump with high school distance runners is because they are going through a growth spurt? It’s a theory that I am working on…
4) East Nasty will be training for the 1/2 marathon. Pencil December 13th on your calendar for a run/informational meeting The training will begin in earnest January 3.

Stuff
1. Remember the Least Nasties (the walkers) will leave at about 6:00. So be on time if you want to join Amy for the walk!

East Nasty of the Week: Elizabeth Chauncey
November 6, 2009

When it comes to charity and love for animals, look no further than Elizabeth Chauncey.
Although born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Elizabeth headed off to London, England at the age of 18 to work for a year. After that she decided to traverse the Earth for another year, seeing some 35 countries throughout Europe, Asia, and Australia. Her favorite was the outskirts and small villages of Turkey, where she and her fellow travelers were taken in by friendly families and befriended by everyone they encountered.
Finally she returned back to the U.S. of A, and settled down in Pennsylvania for awhile. Her love of singing, however, and her desire to be around song writers got her to move to Nashville, which happened just over six years ago. Her group East Side Story is a group of 4 East Nashville musicians, and they just released a 5-song E.P. last summer.
If that weren’t enough, last year she started the non-profit organization East C.A.N. (Community Action Network). Their mission is to “to make a positive and immediate difference in East Nashville by facilitating neighbors helping neighbors.” In a recent Nashville Paw magazine, they ranked Elizabeth and East C.A.N. 3rd in the Best Animal Welfare Organization category. East C.A.N. has also recently helped an Eagle Scout raise awareness for his community project to build wheelchair ramps, assisted Hope Restoration Ministries gain donations of household items for their new Transitional Home for the homeless, and helped another East Nashville resident in her relocation to McMinnville, TN. And of course they have all those wonderful dogs too, who are just waiting for someone to take them home.
It was one of the rescued dogs that brought Elizabeth to East Nasty two months ago. She had seen us running by her house, and knew Mark Miller from church, so she decided to bring out the brindle colored pit bull Sonny, so that he could meet other people and to get a good work out for the dog. Now she is there each week, and she always brings a new dog to meet the group.
It is also important to mention that this last week during run #4, for first time since she joined our group, she ran the entire route without stopping, which truly is awesome because that long uphill coming out of Shelby Bottoms is the devil!
